Come on a Mystery Picnic with us

What’s better than a picnic on a sunny day? A picnic on a sunny day with lush produce from the Tamar Valley and a mystery itinerary that requires you to solve riddles to find each new location. Sounds fun, right?

Riddle Me Adventures is a mystery picnic tour experience with options across Tasmania, including Richmond, the Derwent Valley, the Huon Valley, Bruny Island and Launceston. Lume was invited to test out the northern experience, which begins in Launceston and travels up the gorgeous West Tamar region.

It’s a funny thing writing an article about a mystery tour, because it would be sad for this to read like a massive spoiler. So we’re not going to give too much away, other than to say we give it a big thumbs-up.

Here’s how it went down. We made our booking online and signed up to a portal that steps you through your itinerary. There was packing advice, suggesting we bring cutlery and a cheese board, hat and sunscreen, pen and paper. The $165 fee is for two adults and covers everything except wine, which you can grab yourself if you feel like a tipple.

First stop was a cafe where we received our picnic rug (for keeps) and chugged down a coffee. We were given an activity and some quirky facts, a brain teaser for laughs and then the next location, suggesting a wander through a local park for an iconic selfie on the way.

A bakery. A winery. A providore. We climbed in and out of the car, collecting goodies and stashing them in our cooler bag. At every counter we were met with friendly greetings and delectable packages were handed to us with conspiratory smiles. The riddles and word games kept conversation spritely, and we were thrilled to finally pull up at a little-known spot by the Tamar River to set up our picnic and tuck into food, the smells of which had been wafting enticingly through the car.

It was a generous spread, plenty for two, and the quality you expect of a UNESCO city of gastronomy and its surrounds. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

As we kicked back to the sound of water lapping at the shore, the sun warming our skin, we considered what it was that made it such a special experience. This is where we landed: in a world that heroes bustle, the mystery picnic tour coaxed you into enjoying simple pleasures of food, fun and company. It was like those treasure hunts that you enjoyed at parties as a kid, only with mouth-watering pastries and cheeses instead of chocolate coins and gummy bears.

Our top tip: allow yourself plenty of time. You don’t want to rush the sights, the conversations with providores, and of course, the part where you recline on your picnic rug and indulge in the fare.
